Lymphoblast transformation in rats convalescent from infection with Plasmodium berghei

After rats had spontaneously recovered from Plasmodium berghei infection their splenocytes were cultured in vitro with parasitized erythrocytes and in many cases they responded by lymphoblast transformation. Most rats responded up to at least 5 weeks after recovery but splenocytes of rats that had only low parasitaemias did not respond. Only viable washed parasitized erythrocytes from rats at the stage of rising parasitaemia reliably stimulated splenocytes and no non-specific stimulation occurred.
