Screening for new antitumor antibiotics of the bleomycin group

The effect of various antibiotics of the bleomycin group (including the recently isolated bleomycin, tallysomycin) on cultured, bleomycin sensitive Penicillium avellaneum 444 (PA-444) and its bleomycin-resistant variant was tested. The variant was more resistant to tallysomycin than PA-444 itself, thus confirming its bleomycin group affiliation. The inhibitory effect of cultures of microorganisms producing various anti-tumor antibiotics on the growth of PA-444 and its resistant variant was tested. Antitumor antibiotics not belonging to the bleomycin group did not inhibit cultures of PA-444. Antifungal antibiotics inhibited PA-444 and its variant equally. PA-444 and its variant are convenient and specific test organisms for detection of cultures of microorganisms producing new antitumor antibiotics of the bleomycin group.
