Extra-hepatic or extra-pulmonary localizations of hydatid cysts occur in 10 to 20% of all human cases. The most common are in the spleen (2 to 8% of all cases) and in the kidney (1.5 to 2%). The more serious cases involve the brain, heart, or bones. Infection may also occur in the peritoneum or pleurae, usually by spread from neighbouring organs. Rare cysts may occur in the breast or in the parotid or thyroid glands, or in the subcutaneous tissues or muscles. They have also been reported in the pancreas, retroperitoneum, thorax and orbital spaces.
