Canine vaginal and uterine bacterial flora

Vaginal swab specimens were obtained from 41 immature and 81 mature bitches. Uterine swab specimens were obtained from 22 bitches at ovario-hysterectomy and from 4 bitches during caesarean section. The specimens were cultured for aerobic bacteria. Most bitches harboured some type of bacteria in the vagina, but coagulase-positive staphylococci were isolated more frequently from immature than from mature bitches. When the latter were grouped according to the stage of the oestrous cycle at the time specimens were obtained, there was little difference in bacterial types isolated. It seems that bitches do not normally harbour aerobic bacteria in the uterus.
