Some biological characteristics which predispose humans and higher animals to the development of disease are examined. Asymmetry in the regulatory system of the individual may be due to prolonged functional overloading of the system, developmental complications or congenital insufficiencies or abnormalities, all of which lead to diseases of regulation. The 1st of these factors often is the basic etiological agent and cause of disease, while the latter 2 are conditions which facilitate the onset of disease. The concept is illustrated with the example of hypertension.
