Effect of childbirth on menstrual pattern

Menstrual pattern was studied in 1000 parous women who were not using IUCD [Intrauterine contraceptive devices], steroid contraception or had tubal ligation. All women re-established their periods after the last delivery. Mean age of menarche was 14.5 yr. The average cycle length was of 28-33 days and average period of bleeding 5 days 79.8% had moderate blood loss during periods. Dysmenorrhea was observed in 29.1% of the women, bein mainly of premenstrual congestive type. A change in menstrual pattern after delivery was observed in 30.7%, the pattern improving in 14.8% and worsening in 15.9% of the women. The improvement in menstrual pattern after delivery was mainly in the form of disappearance of dysmenorrhea (65.5%) while the worsening of the pattern was mainly manifested as appearance of menorrhagia (50.7%).
