Enzyme activity of the rat hippocampus, cerebellar cortex and brainstem motor nuclei was examined during methionine sulfoximine (MSO) provoked convulsions. The animals were killed 3, 6 and 10 h after i.p. injection of MSO (600 mg/kg). Convulsions appeared about 4-5 h, status epilepticus developed about 8-9 h after injection. Changes in enzyme activity were more pronounced in the cerebellar cortex (Purkinje cells) and in the motoneurons of the brainstem than in the hippocampus. After 6 h there was no change in the activity of NADH2-diaphorase, .alpha.-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase and ATP-A. The activity of succinic dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase increased slightly. In the activity of lactic dehydrogenase and G-6-P dehydrogenase a marked depression could be observed. After 10 h the decrease in the activity of the enzymes of the citric acid cycle was most expressed.
