M. galloprovincialis collected on the Adriatic seacoast of southern Italy near Bari contained Cd, Co, Cu, Ni and Pb in concentrations considered not yet serious, but still an indication of pollution because the heavy metal concentrations were much higher in coastal areas facing a sewage outfall, a marble sawing plant and other industrial installations. That the Pb content in mussels in 7000 .times. greater than that of the surrounding seawater indicated the enormous concentrating power of mussels for heavy metals.
