Vitamin D deficiency in femoral neck fractures

Women with fractured neck of the femur had significantly lower values for 25-hydroxyvitamin D in serum than patients with fracture caused by a road accident or uninjured controls in January and July, also significantly less P and slightly less Ca. Women with fractured femoral neck had lower vitamin values in January than in July. Of 20 such patients, 10 who were given daily a preparation containing ergocalciferol 15 000 IU and Ca++ about 500 and PO4 560 mg showed a significant increase in that vitamin D metabolite in serum within 14 days; values for other indices in blood and urine also differed from those of patients without the medication.
