Differential-diagnostic symptoms of mitral valve defect and arteriosclerotic cardiosclerosis complicated by auricular fibrillation

The significance of a series of ECG indices in the differential diagnosis of mitral valvular disease complicated by cardiac fibrillation vs. atherosclerotic cardiosclerosis was examined in 73 human patients (41 with atherosclerotic cardiosclerosis and 32 with mitral valvular disease) over 50 yr old. The macrowave form of fibrillation and the frequency of atrial waves less than 500/min were not characteristic symptoms for patients with mitral valvular disease complicated by cardiac fibrillation over 50 yr old. The most characteristic indices for this group were R levels in the III lead of 0.5 mW and more and the symptoms of hypertrophy of the right ventricle, often in combination with symptoms of hypertrophy of the left ventricle. The lack of clinical and ECG symptoms of coronary insufficiency was more characteristic of the patients over 50 yr old with mitral defects than the patients with atherosclerotic cardiosclerosis.
