A study to determine the effect of copper IUD use on the acute-phase proteins haptoglobin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, and C-reactive protein was undertaken. The serum levels of these parameters were measured in 50 women, 20-35 years of age. The blood samples were taken before and 10-30 weeks after the insertion of a Copper T-200. No significant changes in the parameters were observed, which would imply that the mechanism of effectiveness of the copper IUD does not rely on a systemic humoral reaction centered in the liver, where these acute-phase proteins are synthesized.
