The role of brain monoamines in pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced clonic convulsions in rat was studied by using drugs with well defined effects on brain monoamine activity. PTZ convulsions were significantly inhibited by treatments known to elevate brain serotonin and noradrenaline but not by selective increase in brain dopamine. PTZ convulsions were potentiated by reserpine and by drugs which inhibit brain serotonin and noradrenaline activity but not by decrease in brain dopamine activity. Apparently brain serotonin and noradrenaline, but not dopamine, function as inhibitory neurotransmitters in PTZ induced clonic convulsions in rat.
