Systemic fungal infections in cats

Aspergillus sp. was isolated in culture from 2 domestic cats with symptoms of acute pneumonia and, in one case, ileitis. A phycomycete was isolated, but not identified from a third cat with severe, necrotizing colitis. Two of the cats had pathological lesions compatible with feline leukopenia and this, together with the prolonged antibiotic treatment which the animals had received, was thought to have predisposed the animals to the severe fungal infection.
