The lipidemic patterns of 53 patients ages 22-65 with arteriosclerosis classified by the 5 Breddin (I to V) classes were compared with their platelet aggregation index (PAI), measured in stages O, I Ia, II, IIa and III. To study the validity of PAI the patients' cholesterolemia, triglyceridemia, pre-.beta.-lipoproteinemia and lipoproteinemia were considered. No statistically significant differences between the 2 distributions were seen. Of subjects with cholesterolemia > 220 mg/100 ml, 85. 72% were included in the higher brackets of PAI. The significance of the PAI classification with the Breddin system is demonstrated. PAI is reproducible and not subject to operator interpretation. The 4 parameters of lipidemia are in consonance with the PAI classification and emphasize the role of lipidemia in platelet aggregation.
