In test periods of from 4 to 10 days, metabolically healthy patients, 18 to 69 years old, had a complete parenteral diet with energy 1800 kcal, also N 7.5 to 8.1 g daily from Aminosteril, Aminoplasmal in its normal or in a specially modified form, or Aminofusin. The solutions differed in total amountshof essential and nonessential amino acids and quality of the latter, also in their absolute and relative methionine content. Studied indices of metabolism of N and amino acids were total N, alpha -amino N and creatinine in 24-h urine, total N in faeces, and free amino acids in blood serum and erythrocytes. Results were compared with values obtained before and after the test, when feeding was by mouth. The requirement for methionine depended on the total supply of amino acids. L-Glutamic acid was a necessary constituent of the dietary solutions. For intra- and extracellular homeostasis of amino acids and good N balance, Aminofusin and modified Aminoplasmal were the most effective.
