Cetraxate [4-(2-carboxyethyl) phenyl trans-4-aminomethylcyclohexane carboxylate hydrochloride] has antiplasmin, antikallikrein, antitrypsin activities and other pharmacological effects. The therapeutic effects of cetraxate and other anti-ulcerative agents were compared in 71 patients with gastric ulcers. After 1 mo., 14 of 30 patients (47%) treated with cetraxate and 13 of 41 patients (32%) treated with other agents were cured. On 2 mo. treatment, 70% of the cases treated with cetraxate and 81% of those treated with other drugs were cured. No side effects of cetraxate were noted. Many factors are involved in the healing of gastric ulcers and healing cannot always be attributed to the therapeutic drugs, but cetraxate is apparently clinically effective on treatment of gastric ulcers.
