Studies on the mechanism of stimulation of growth hormone (IR-HGH) by glucagon in patients with chronic liver diseases

In 29 patients with chronic hepatocellular disease, levels of growth hormone (IRGH), insulin and glucose were determined after i.m. injection of 1 mg of glucagon. Concentrations of IR-HGH increased significantly between 90 and 180 min after glugagon injection, apparently as a result of decrease of hyperglycemia (induced by glucagon) to normal values of blood glucose. However, an influence of factors other than the change in glycemia on the elevation of IR-HGH concentration cannot be excluded. The character of liver diseases had no significant influence on the time-course of IR-HGH after glucagon administration.
