Detection of alpha 1 feto protein in liver disorders and certain gastro-intestinal tract cancers by counter-immuno-electrophoresis

The diagnostic specificity of .alpha.1-fetoprotein (A1FP) in malignancy is lessened by radioimmunoassay findings because A1FP is observed in various other nonmalignant liver disorders and in normals. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP), being a less sensitive method, can be used as a specific test for the diagnosis of hepatoma as it fails to detect levels of A1FP in normals and the minute increase in other liver disorders. Patients (115) with various liver disorders and certain gastrointestinal cancers nonmetastatic to liver were tested for A1FP; 45.45% of hepatoma cases showed positive results. Gastrointestinal tract cancers without hepatic involvement, other liver disorders and normal controls showed negative results.
