Progressive tympanic abdominal distension with markedly reduced chest excursions and concomitant respiratory distress developed in a neonate who was delivered by cesarean section after a prolonged labor. He died within hours of birth. The foci of peritoneal calcifications seen in the roentgenogram and on postmortem examination represent calcified meconium. Acute onset of massive abdominal distension associated with respiratory difficulty in the neonatal period is presumptive evidence of perforation of the gastrointestinal tract.
