Prevalence of neutralizing antibodies against adenoviruses at Lucknow

Sera from 400 civil and military personnel [in Lucknow, Punjab, India] were examined for the presence of neutralizing antibodies to type 2, 7 and 8 adenoviruses. Antibodies to 1 or more adenoviruses were found in 25.7% of sera. The incidence was slightly higher in the military population (26.6%) than in civilians (23.7%). Maximum incidence was of type 2 (13.75%), followed by type 7 (10%), the lowest being of type 8 (5.75%). Antibodies against more than 1 type in different combinations were seen in 14 sera. The incidence of adenovirus antibodies was high in children below 10 yr of age.
