Incidence and treatment of budding yeasts in canine otitis externa

Budding yeasts, usually associated with bacteria, were isolated from 35 of 50 dogs with otitis externa. The discharge was typically dry, waxy and reddish-brown. Treatment with an antibiotic-antifungal-corticosteroid ointment combined with diluted vinegar lavage produced only fair results. Of 25 dogs treated 3 responded well but 20 had a recurrence (2 were lost to follow-up). After treatment with the same ointment combined with lavage with aqueous solutions of poloxamer-iodine 17 of 25 dogs responded well, requiring no further treatment, and 8 responded well but required further treatment after a recurrence.
