Cells lavaged from guinea pig lungs selectively release the lysosomal enzymes .beta.-glucuronidase and lysozyme during the process of phagocytosis. The total enzymatic activity of .beta.-glucuronidase was elevated in zymosan-exposed compared with non-exposed cells. The divalent cation carrying ionophore A23187, 2-[(3, 9, 11-trimethyl)-8-(2-pyrrole carboxymethyl)-1, 7-dioxaspiro [6.6] undecyl-2-methyl]-5-methyl amino benzoxazole-4-carboxylic acid, did not stimulate lysosomal enzyme release. Transmission and scanning electron micrographs demonstrate particle uptake and are consistent with enzyme release.
