Quipazine, a new type of antidepressant drug can directly stimulate 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors in the brain. An attempt was made to verify hypothesis that quipazine might affect the food intake of rats as a consequence of its ability to mimic 5-HT activity. Both quipazine and fenfluramine act by increasing central serotoninergic activity, the former through a direct stimulation of 5-HT receptors, the latter by making more 5-HT available for the receptors. The hypothesis for an involvement of central 5-HT in the mechanisms regulating food intake was supported. Quipazine may be an additional useful tool to investigate such mechanisms.
