There was distinct clinical improvement in about half the patients with chronic renal insufficiency after 1 to 2 weeks on a potato and egg diet supplying 2500 kcal daily with about 25 g protein; some were able to resume work. With strict observance of the diet the urea:creatinine ratio in blood was 10:1 compared with between 20 and 30:1 on a normal diet. If meat was included in the diet muscle fibres were detected in faeces. No effect may be expected in patients with serum creatinine above 16 mg/100 ml.
