Indices of the state of T- and B[bone marrow derived)-lymphocytes and neutrophil phagocytic activity were studied in 40-60 yr old humans with atherosclerosis (stage I and III) and ischemic heart disease. Variations in the response to phytohemagglutinin stimulation and in autoantibody and normal antibody levels indicated the presence of immunodeficiency in atherosclerotic patients and in old age, and suggest a close correlation between atherosclerosis and premature aging. Use of agents to increase immune response in atherosclerotic patients and caution in prescribing immunodepressants are recommended.
