Vidarabine is as effective as IDU in the treatment of herpetic epithelial keratitis. It appears to offer some safety advantages over IDU, such as less deleterious effect on corneal wound healing. Vidarabine appears to be more effective than IDU in vaccinial keratitis and is effective in many patients intolerant of or resistant to IDU. Vidarabine appears to be an important new drug in ophthalmic therapy.
