African human trypanosomiasis is thoroughly reviewed with 86 references. The clinical features and the development of the infection are described and special features such as myocarditis, hepatic dysfunction, coagulation abnormalities, raised IgM levels and kinin release are described. Diagnosis, including mass surveys, chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis are also reviewed. Trypanosomiasis in Botswana, Angola and Mozambique is discussed and the clinical features and treatment of 13 cases seen in Johannesburg, South Africa are tabulated.
