Renal artery stenosis and diurnal rhythm of water and sodium excretion under conditions of restricted fluid intake

In 17 patients with renal artery stenosis excretion of water was greater at night than during the day, the opposite of the situation in 8 healthy persons. After withdrawal of fluid for 36 h excretion of water was significantly reduced in both groups during the day and at night. Excretion of Na increased at night in the patients but decreased in the healthy persons. During fluid withdrawal excretion of Na fell at night in both groups, though the ratio of Na excreted during the day to that excreted at night increased slightly in the patients.
