Candida arthritis associated with positive birefringent crystals without chondrocalcinosis

The case is presented of a 70-yr-old diabetic man with obstructive uropathy due to a prostate adenoma and who was admitted because of the sudden appearance of high fever, urinary symptons and left knee swelling. The synovial fluid and tissue yielded C. albicans. The crystals were clearly seen on synovianalysis. Therapy with amphotericin B was successful.
