Intensive care: virtue or vice?: a psychological view

The nature of the psychological problems which can arise in intensive care units (ICU) is discussed; physical as well as psychological and environmental factors are held responsible. Some of the problems observed are delirium, depression, anxiety and aggression, encompassed by the term intensive care syndrome. Similar symptoms could be induced by sensory monotony and sleep deprivation, both common factors in an ICU.
