Extrinsic autonomic nervous regulation of the biliary system in dogs

The extrinsic autonomic nervous regulation of the biliary system was investigated in anesthetized dogs. Bilateral cervical vagotomy caused a decreasing perfusion pressure through the sphincter of Oddi, along with intramural duodenal pressure and gallbladder pressure. These responses were affected slightly by bilateral splanchnicotomy and then were recovered by bilateral adrenalectomy. Bilateral splanchnicotomy had no effect on the intramural duodenal pressure and the perfusion pressure through the sphincter of Oddi. The perfusion pressure through the sphincter of Oddi and the intramural duodenal pressure were increased by right vagal stimulation. This increase was inhibited by atropine. The perfusion pressure through the sphincter of Oddi and the intramural duodenal pressure were decreased by left great splanchnic nerve stimulation. These responses were inhibited by propranolol, phentolamine or bilateral adrenalectomy. The splanchnic nerve stimulation increased or decreased the gallbladder pressure. The increase was inhibited by phentolamine, and the decrease was inhibited by propranolol. The vagus nerve is the extrinsic factor which acts predominantly on the biliary system. The decrease of pressure in the biliary system by bilateral vagotomy is partially mediated through the adrenal gland. The splanchnic nerve acts to inhibit the movement to the Oddi muscle through relaxation-mediating .beta.-receptors.
