Auditory thresholds of release of electrodermal responses in the cat

The absolute thresholds for release of electrodermal responses (EDR) by sound stimulation (1000 Hz for 25) were measured at 4 levels of vigilance in the cat: waking (W), somnolence (SI), sleep (SII) and paradoxical sleep (PS). The EDR could be released by sound intensities lower than those that provoked EEG or behavioral arousal. The thresholds relative to W were: 19 dB for SI, 23 dB for SII and 57 dB during PS. During W the thresholds varied according to the animal's behavior; they were lower during visual exploration of the environment.
