Reticular thresholds of release of electrodermal responses in the cat

The absolute thresholds for the start of electrodermal responses (EDR) induced by stimulation of the mesencephalic reticular formation were measured in the cat during 4 stages of vigilance: waking, somnolence, slow wave sleep and paradoxal sleep. The threshold was defined as the median intensity of stimulation which causes a response. The EDR could be released by intensities of reticular stimulation lower than those which produced electroencephalic awakening of the animal. The results contradicted data obtained by sensory stimulation during the waking-sleeping cycle in man.
