Depressed effector cell function in antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity in kidney allograft recipients

Effector cells in antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) are not-T (thymus derived) cells carrying receptors for the Fc portion of IgG. Effector cell function was assessed in kidney allograft recipients. In addition, the relationship of effector cell function with serum factors was investigated. Seventy-three healthy subjects, 25 hemodialysis patients, and 30 clinically stable kidney allograft recipients were studied. Three additional patients were observed during rejection therapy. A cellular function, the capacity to lyse antibody-coated targets, is diminished in transplant patients. This seems to be influenced by immunosuppressive drugs and by blocking factors in the plasma of some patients. The autologous blocking found in some of the transplant and dialysis patients may be because of the formation of immune complexes between antibodies and soluble antigens from transfusions or kidney grafts.
