Solutions of 14C-labeled phenylalanine, tyrosine, glycine and urea, in the presence of a surfactant, were each applied externally to the stem and leaves of separate P. bracteatum plants. The isotopes were applied 3-4 wk before seed ripening, when the plants were harvested. The capsule, stem, leaves and root-stem transition zone were extracted separately and analyzed for radioactive material. All of the compounds applied were metabolized to a significant extent and thebain, the main alkaloid, was always one of the metabolites.
