In 1964, the Society of Nuclear Medicine [USA] formed the Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) Committee for the purpose of critiquing the methods then known for calculating absorbed radiation doses and developing a method to accurately assess the absorbed radiation dose to patients receiving internally administered radiolabeled compounds. The use of a revised MIRD equation where the specific concentration of a radionuclide is known allows a simple and accurate determination of several important dosimetric quantities useful in determining radiolytic decomposition of radiopharmaceuticals and radiochemicals in solution.
