Biochemical and histological studies of cows with ketosis

Comparison was between cows with clinical or subclinical ketosis and healthy cows from the same herds. In blood of ketotic cows, glucose was about 40% less and ketone bodies, total lipids and free fatty acids were 4.6, 2.6 and 3.5 times more than in controls. In the affected cows blood pyruvate was increased and liver glycogen was reduced; activity of glucose-6-phosphatase was less and that of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was more than for controls.
