The antiestrogenic agent, tamoxifen, is a recent treatment of advanced breast cancer. The 1st results were presented in 1971-1972 by Cole et al and in 1973 by Ward and Brewin. The dosages used in their studies were 10-40 mg daily. Objective responses of > 50% were obtained in 25% of cases. In this study, 51.6% of the women had regressions of .gtoreq. 50% for at least 3 mo. The results are similar to those presented by Pearson using the same dosage of 40 mg daily. He reported 45% of responses with a duration of 8 mo. up to the time of the report. The effectiveness of tamoxifen and its excellent tolerance suggest an important new role in the treatment of of advanced breast cancer.
