Neonatal thyrotoxicosis associated with the hyperviscosity syndrome

Neonatal thyrotoxicosis and hyperviscosity may separately result in congestive heart failure and symptoms of neurologic dysfunction. Previous case reports have not considered a possible association or even recorded high venous hematocrit in an infant with documented hyperthyroidism. Careful assessment of venous hematocrit should be made in any infant with neonatal thyrotoxicosis. Congenital hyperthyroidism should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of neonatal polycythemia. Only by considering both syndromes can optimal therapy be offered the often critically ill newborn infant with these symptoms.
