The relation between the course of O2 consumption after onset and termination of cold and tolerance of mice to whole-body X-irradiation was studied. The transient state of O2 consumption is characterized by 2 quantitative parameters, i.e., slope of curve and fluctuation of its course in time. The response to cold stress, as determined the day before irradiation, markedly differs in surviving and dying animals. Regulation of heat production during the 2 transient states may be considered to be more effective for maintaining thermal homeostasis in surviving animals than in dying ones.
