The synthesis of dinitrophenylthioether-substituted Sephadex G-25 and Sepharose 6B gels is described. The dinitrophenylthio ligand is a .pi.-electron acceptor capable of forming charge-transfer complexes with electron-donor substances. The charge-transfer adsorption chromatography separation of a number of neurophysiologically important compounds including tryptamine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, serotonin, IAA, epinephrine, norepinephrine, L-dopa, mescaline, acetophenazine, fluphenazine and chlorpromazine is described.
