The effect of .lambda.-carrageenan on the survival of heterotopic cardiac allografts in the rat was studied. Sixteen rats received 5 mg purified .lambda.-carrageenan/kg i.v. at the end of the transplant procedure. Seven untreated rats were controls. All control rat hearts stopped by the 9th postoperative day (mean survival 7.6 days). Of the treated rats, 6 of 16 survived the immediate postoperative period (67% mortality). An impressive increase in transplant survival was noted in the surviving rats. Cessation of heart beats occurred 13, 36, 53, 54, 112 and 126 days post-transplantation. The effect of carrageenan on in vivo macrophage C clearance before and after treatment with Corynebacterium parvum was also studied.
