Treatment of amoebiasis with metronidazole and entamide furoate

In Ethiopia, 38 Peace Corps Volunteers with intestinal amoebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica) were given metronidazole, 750 mg 3 times a day for 10 days, followed by 500 mg entamide furoate 3 times a day for another 10 days. Cysts disappeared from the faeces of 36 patients and from the other 2 after a 2nd course of treatment. No serious side effects were noted nor did late sequalae of extra-intestinal amoebiasis occur in any of the patients.
