Light-induced development of photosynthetic enzymes in etiolated detached leaves of Oryza sativa and Setaria italica during greening

The light-induced formation of photosynthetic enzymes in Setaria italica and rice, C4 and C3 plants resp., was compared. Illumination of detached, etiolated leaves resulted in increases of chlorophyll and Calvin cycle enzymes in both spp. Enzymes of the C4 pathway also increased on illumination in S. italica but not rice. The comparable increases in the activities of Calvin cycle and C4 pathway enzymes in S. italica leaves suggested that there was a parallel development of these enzymes in response to light in bundle sheath and mesophyll cells. The light-induced increases of all the enzymes were inhibited by chloramphenicol and cycloheximide, which implied that the increased enzyme activity was due to the synthesis of new proteins and not to the activation of existing enzymes.
