Possible clinical applications of phentyrin were investigated and compared to azathioprine using tests on white mice. As an alkylating agent, phentyrin decreased the number of hemopoietic cells. Doses of 50 mg/kg did not affect numbers of erythrocytes but lowered the overall number of leukocytes, producing lymphopenia. Azathioprine statistically lowered the number of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and lymphocytes. A dose of 50 mg/kg was accompanied by the decrease of lymphoid, myeloid and erythroid cells and resulted in a decrease of cells in the spleen and bone marrow. The inhibitory action of azathioprine as a nucleic acid metabolism antimetabolite was directed at mother hemopoietic cells.
