Study of renin activity in the peripheral blood of patients with vasorenal hypertension and solitary kidney

The renin-angiotensin system was studied in 7 patients with vasorenal hypertension with stenosis of the artery in a single remaining kidney. In 7 of the persons during extremely high arterial pressure the renin activity in the peripheral blood was no higher than in apparently healthy people. After reconstructive surgery and restoration of circulation through the renal artery, normalization of arterial pressure was noted in 4 of the patients studied, which remained long after the operation, while the renin activity in 3 continued on a level characteristic for healthy persons. The participation of the renin-angiotensin system in the maintenance of arterial hypertension in stenosis of the renal artery of 1 remaining kidney is probably less than in similar patients with both kidneys, and the determination of renin activity during this pathology has no special diagnostic importance.
