Single drug antimicrobial therapy is usually recommended for the treatment of bacterial infections provided the offending pathogen is sensitive in vitro to the administered antibiotic. One might wonder whether in patients with hematological diseases a multiple antibiotic regimen would be more effective than a single drug alone, since neutropenic patients are particularly susceptible to bacterial infections. Studies are reviewed. One of the major drawbacks of multiple drug therapy is an increased frequency of adverse reactions.
