Inhalation exposure of 18 h fasted male rats to 1,1-dichloroethylene cycle. These results suggest mitochondrial injury as a result of 1,1-DCE exposure. The elevation of citric acid concentration suggests that monochloroacetic acid, a known metabolite of 1,1-DCE, may be converted to monochlorocitric acid, an inhibitor of aconitase in the TCA cycle. The monochloroacetic acid may be toxic to mitochondria by a direct action.
