An anaphylactic mechanism involving IgE-sensitized basophils and mastocytes was described as necessary for vascular immune complex deposition in rabbit acute serum sickness. Several evidences indicate a role of IgE-basophil/mastocyte system in human pathology. A basophil degranulation occurs in patients with lupus erythematosus and biopsies performed in the acute phases of the sickness present a marked decrease of granulated mast-cells. There may be a role of IgE-basophil/mastocyte system in immune complex deposition in man.
