Clinical records and autopsy reports of 50 patients in Iran who died of gangrenous amoebic colitis, with or without frank perforation, are reviewed. Preterminally, the patients had a picture simulating septic shock. Loss of haemoglobin and albumin due to protracted diarrhoea, dehydration, impaired hepatic function and lowered resistance when associated with gram-negative septicaemia probably resulted in the high mortality rate found with this condition.
